Casey Chevrolet knows that hurricane season is a nerve-wracking time of year. The potential for high winds, heavy rain, and storm surges can pose a threat to you, your family, your home, and your vehicle. We’ve put together this guide on vehicle safety tips to help your car stay safe before and after a hurricane.

Before the Storm

In the days leading up to a hurricane, there are steps you can take to protect your car. If you’re evacuating, ensure your vehicle is fueled up and stocked with essentials, bringing it in for service if you notice anything amiss. If you’re sheltering in place, pull your car into the garage and cover the garage windows for additional protection. If you don’t have a garage, park on high ground next to large, sturdy buildings. A Chevrolet car cover can add a little extra protection.

After the Hurricane

Once the storm has passed and your local authorities have given the all-clear, you can assess your vehicle for damage. Here are tips:

  • If no water surrounds your car, open it to ensure it’s dry inside. You can start the vehicle but only drive on roads that are open to the public. If you do see water inside, contact our service department for help.
  • Depending on the storm’s severity, your car could be submerged in water. If the water level is below your doors, there might not be much damage. However, if the water rises above the bottom of your doors, there may be damage to the interior and the car’s mechanical and electrical systems. Do not start your vehicle, as that could cause additional damage.

Keep in mind that hurricanes can cause dangerous flash flooding. After the storm, only approach your vehicle if local authorities deem its location safe.
