How Does Bidirectional Charging Work?
Electric vehicles are changing the way we think about energy use, and one of the most exciting advancements is bidirectional charging. With this technology, your Chevy Silverado EV can do more than just charge; it can also supply electricity to tools, appliances, or even your home. At Casey Chevrolet, we’re here to explain how it works and why it matters.
Unidirectional vs. Bidirectional Charging
Many EVs are equipped with unidirectional charging. You simply plug into a Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 charger and replenish the vehicle’s battery. However, bidirectional charging is more functional. You still charge the battery, but models with bidirectional charging (such as the Chevrolet Silverado EV) also come with power outlets that let you run electricity to outside sources, like power tools at your jobsite or lighting and a small refrigerator at your campground. Some gas models do this too, but bidirectional charging lets you use electricity even while the vehicle is off.
How it Works
All EVs convert the incoming alternating current (AC) power into direct current (DC) for storage. But only vehicles wired for bidirectional charging let the vehicle’s battery convert direct current back to alternating current so it can power tools, appliances, or even your entire home during a blackout.
Different Types of Bidirectional Charging
There are a few different types you can take advantage of. The most common is Vehicle-to-Load, or V2L. Here, you can plug external sources into your vehicle’s power outlet just like you would at your home.
The second type is Vehicle-to-Home (V2H). This requires a GM Energy PowerShift® Level 2 charger that can be installed in your garage, and it’s extremely useful in case there’s a power outage. V2H bidirectional charging allows your EV to act as a generator by supplying electricity to your home.
Why Bidirectional Charging Matters for Drivers
Bidirectional charging isn’t just a technical feature—it’s a practical benefit. Whether you need backup power for your home during an outage or portable energy for tools and recreational gear, this capability adds flexibility to your daily life. As more public infrastructure supports it, bidirectional charging will become an even greater advantage for EV drivers.
