Get Ready for REAL ID in Virginia
Starting May 7, 2025, U.S. travelers will need a REAL ID-compliant license or identification card to board domestic flights or access certain federal facilities. At Casey Chevrolet, we want our community to be prepared well ahead of time. Since your next DMV visit might be the perfect opportunity to update your documents, let’s run down the essentials.
REAL ID, Explained
There’s a lot in the news lately about the REAL ID, and Casey Chevrolet is here to answer your questions. The most common question we’ve heard is: What exactly is a REAL ID, and why do I need one?
A REAL ID is an upgraded photo identification card. It’ll look very similar to your old driver’s license and still include your picture, date of birth, home address, and other key information. The main visible difference will be a star in the upper right corner. These ID cards have enhanced security and anti-counterfeiting properties that old licenses and state IDs didn’t.
Do You Need One?
While this new form of federal identification might not affect drivers specifically, it will impact your ability to fly domestically. Starting in May 2025, you’ll need either a REAL ID, a valid passport, or an ID issued by the U.S. Department of Defense. If you’re one of our many Hampton Roads, VA neighbors with a valid military ID, you can use that to board your plane.
If you don’t have a passport or military ID, you also won’t be able to enter federal facilities, including the military bases in our area. This could prevent you from visiting your friends and family on our local bases, but a REAL ID and the proper authorization will allow your entry.
How to Get a REAL ID in Virginia
To obtain a real ID in Virginia, you’ll need to fill out an application and then bring a few required documents to your local DMV. These documents include proof of identity, Virginia residency, and legal presence, plus proof of your social security number. You’ll need to bring original copies of each, plus cash, a check, or a credit card to pay the fee.
Get It Done Early
With the deadline fast approaching, DMV appointments are hard to get. Taking care of your REAL ID now helps you avoid last-minute stress, especially if you’re planning summer travel or applying for a new job that requires secure facility access.
